formidable jazz artist." - All Music Guide

"Under the musical direction of pianist
Rich Eames, backed by an Eames-led sextet and supplementary string quartet provide eider-soft yet oak-sturdy nests for each tune, Krebs so skillfully invades the likes of "Baltimore Oriole", "Skylark", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square", Lennon & McCartney's "Blackbird" and Abbey Lincoln's "Bird Alone" that the result is like a series of delicate yet masterfully constructed origami creatures."

"The preservation of the world lies in understanding and appreciating
the wonder and awe that nature arouses." (E.O.Wilson)
|
|
With Jazz Aviary, I hope to express the "wonder and awe that nature arouses", specifically that Birds arouse - through Music, Poetry, Visual Projections, simple ornithological Facts - and by listening to the birds themselves on field recordings of Birdsong. There have been various incarnations of this concert for over 3 years - it has been a thrilling flight for which I am grateful, and one I am eager to continue. *** May you always hear the birds sing!

Jazz Aviary Testimonials:
" Jazz Aviary is more than just a delightfully intimate concert by superb musicians. It's an exploration of the world of winged ones and an exhultation of song as human and avian expression. This melange of music, field recordings, humor and fact (like crows use tools and have a language), offers sophisticated entertainment that educates on the sly and inspires our souls to soar. Ultimately, Jazz Aviary affirms human openness with Nature's fascinating diversity."
Marsha Scarbrough, Journalist

"These songbirds every morning at 5 A.M would be really annoying if they weren't so damn talented!"

"Susan expands our notion of music (and jazz) by returning it to its origins in nature. Her voice is rich and assured and I love how the band's interactions reflect the birdsong."
Dennis Hicks, Psychotherapist
"I've enjoyed many of Susan's theatrical, film and television performances over the years. But Susan really out-does even herself in Jazz Aviary. It's a delightfully surprising and highly entertaining show - and a neatly crafted little gem." Howard Goodwin, Paramount Pictures Music Department
"Susan Krebs' Jazz Aviary is a "concept concert"...Field recordings of songbirds and Susan's witty coments about them interlace an array of beautifully performed jazz songs about birds, inspired by birds, paeans to birds...and in the midst of this entertaining evening, one realizes that it's obviously birds who taught us to sing." John Binder, Filmmaker
